Members of Congress and the president had pushed back against shutting down the publication.
The Defense Department has rescinded its decision to end the publication of the military’s independent newspaper, the Stars and Stripes. The Pentagon had ordered the paper to stop production by the end of September, and completely dissolve the organization by January of next year in order to utilize for “higher-priority issues,” Defense Secretary Esper said.
A bipartisan group of legislators sent a letter to the Secretary of Defense calling for him to reinstate funding to keep the publication operating.
President Trump had also objected to ending the paper, stating last week, “The United States of America will NOT be cutting funding to @starsandstripes magazine under my watch. It will continue to be a wonderful source of information to our Great Military!“
The Stars and Stripes was first published during the Civil War and has been consistently published since the Second World War.
As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…
- For God to lead President Trump to protect the free press in the United States.
- That the Defense Department would be given wisdom on the best way to use its funding.
- For Secretary Esper to be used by God to lead the Defense Department with wisdom and strength.
